Real Community

My friends (from CO) and I started a blog. It’s called Real Community. We simply post about life, faith, troubles, etc… We created it for many reasons. One, because we are all now in multiple states, it is hard to stay in touch with each other. This blog helps us do just that. Two, because we are thirsty for something. We are searching for something. We are a part of something bigger than ourselves. We want to share with you what this something is. And three, because we are messed up. We are far from perfect. Yes, we are Christians. No, we don’t have it figured out.

Stuck

I hate this spot more than ever. I’m stuck. I can’t do anything about it. I’m leaning on the strong arm of Christ, but my mind tells me that is not enough. My heart fights. It knows I can be strong through Christ. I am strong through Christ. There will come a time where this spot will hold me no longer.

What Matters?

*(When I say 'you' in this post, I am speaking to myself. You can choose to take whatever you want out of it)

I want you to ask yourself a question... What really matters? What matters in life? What matters to you?

Be honest with yourself. Is it what you intend to matter? Here's how I see it - You say things about faith and love all the time. You talk about who you are or who you are not. You talk about belonging to the Body - the community of believers who love Christ. I can tell that you mean these things when you talk about them. They are rooted deep down in you.

But what confuses me is that you are not always who you say you are (or are not). If you are a new man in Christ, if you are transformed by Him and His love, then let me tell you something: You don't matter. When I say this, I am talking about the very nature of which you live for yourself. Yourself does not matter. If you speak about living for Christ, then give up yourself. Completely. Hold nothing back. Every part of you must be given to Christ (we all know that you can only keep what you freely give). So if you're worried about making a difference, building a positive reputation, making sure that others see you as a good person, you have it all wrong. That doesn't matter. What matters is your true intendedness. Your intendedness to belong to Christ and His Body. Once you learn to freely give all of yourself to this Body and to stop worrying about yourself and your status or reputation, then your actions will begin to support who you say you are. They will begin to show who you are not - You are not your own, you are Christ's. So give yourself away.

Act

I intend nothing else but to live for Christ and to be a part of His Body.

So I must act. Act justly. Act justly for what I believe is true. Act justly for what I believe is good. Act justly for who God is and for the Body that I am a part of.

Ringing

I am not sure where it came from or how long it has been there.

I cannot concentrate on what is in front of me.

I can only think about what is to come.

I look around and everything seems irrelevant.

It's as if I am searching for something more.

I look behind and all I see is darkness.

I look ahead and find a small light.

I move forward. I do not look back.

Light draws me in.

Darkness pulls.

Every step gets harder.

I arrive.

The door in front of me is cracked open.

Light from behind is flooding through.

There is a lot on my mind. There always is. I am never able to communicate clearly what exactly is on my mind. A lot has happened and is happening these past four months. More than I can possibly explain. I'm so blessed to be surrounded by people who understand God's love and they can understand me and what is happening without actually understanding. You know who you are but I'm not sure you know how thankful I am for you. And for that I am sorry. I have never been the best at showing my gratitude and I promise I'll genuinely work on it. For now, I'm just so thankful for you in my life.

Change. I will never understand how change works. Or should I say how God changes you. Yeah. That's more like it. To be honest, I love it! To be honest once more, I hate it. Change is never black and white. It is the continuous process in which God works in your life and relationships. It is something to await. Something to long for. Something to hope for. Something to ask for. But not for the sake of self satisfaction. But rather for the sake of furthering the Kingdom of God.

Well it sure has been a while since I've last written. It's now Christmas Eve and I feel like this past year was a blur. There is so much I could write right now but I can't possibly express the change and the happenings that have occurred these past few months. I simply want to express how thankful I am. I am so grateful that the Lord's love never changes. As far off from His will as I can be, He still loves. It's a love that I truly cannot grasp. But it is also a love that welcomes me whenever I'm ready to start living for him again. It is a love that triggers action. When I ask myself, "If I were sure that I loved God, what would I do?" I realize that my response is to love. To love Him back and to love others. But let me be honest, I've done a horrible job of doing this. First, I do not show enough thanks to the ones I love, the people who are a part of my life. Second, my pride and judgmental tendencies get in the way for me to love everyone else. Love is something to work on, but also something that will come naturally in response to the Love of our Father.

A Few New Friends

Today, I went downtown with no purpose. As I was walking around, I passed few people holding signs "apologizing for the the way Christians have acted." One said "I'm sorry for passing judgement instead of extending love." As I went to talk with them, a few other people my age did too. We began to talk, and I soon realized that these three young people are street kids, homeless youth. My heart broke for them. I asked them if I could buy them some food and they took me to one of their favorite pizza places. We began to talk. We talked about quite a bit in a short amount of time. We talked about how people like me are arrogant and don't know much about homeless youth. Before this conversation, I was taught that homeless youth try to stay hidden and they don't want to be known as homeless. This is true. They desire to be seen as human beings. Who doesn't? What I learned is that just because they don't want to be seen as a homeless person, doesn't mean they don't want to be heard. They desire people to hear their cries, their hurt, their hope. God gave me the gift of film and photography for a reason. I can tell their story. I briefly mentioned that I wanted to tell a story about homeless youth in America and they were thrilled. Before talking with them, I thought that telling a story about homeless youth would be impossible considering they don't want to be seen as homeless. Now I see that they just want to be heard. They deserve to be heard. They will be heard. Today, I made three new friends: Chai, Kyle, and Whiskey. I can't wait to see them again.

In a Month

Well it's been a while since I have last blogged a little about life. The last time I did was a little less than a month ago when I was in the San Juan Islands studying Biology. I wrote about how God was doing big things in my life and even though I didn't know what it was, I still relied on the Lord to give me understanding.

Today, I'm not saying I have figured out what God is saying to me... only that God has brought me a lot closer to what He's teaching me. There is really only one word that can describe it - Love. Yeah, love. A word that can be tossed around a lot and it's meaning and truth may be buried far away from someone's heart. Well this past month, through various conversations I had and services I went to, the word love has been much more than a word in the back of my mind.

A month ago, I would have said that I love Christ, I loved others, and that I was spirit filled. A month ago, these things were very true. But today, these things are true in a completely different way. Now, I can say that it really is a love that I can't explain. Just thinking about it really leaves my speechless. This past month, God has teaching me more of what His heart looks like and how big His love is. The thing is, no one will ever come close to understanding how big God's love is. But His mercy is so big and He chooses to love us. How can we not act on this love? Now I see that everything I do is because of God's love. Now I see that belonging to Christ is something different than inviting Him into your heart, doing a couple good things every day, and waiting for eternal life. Belonging to Christ means we are in eternal life now, it means we have given all of ourselves to Him, it means everything we do is because of His love. Wow.

I could really go on for days on everything that has happened this month, how I am so satisfied and so hungry at the same time, or how good and merciful the Lord is for changing my heart like this... But I think I've made my point.

It's funny how much can change in 30 days.

Seek, And You Will Find

I'm sitting on my bed on the last night on this remote island for a marine biology class and I am thinking about everything expect what I should be thinking about -the final exam tomorrow. But that's not the point of this post. In fact, I don't really know what is the point. Maybe that's the point: that I don't know. Right now, God's doing some huge things in my life. Things I wouldn't expect to happen or even wouldn't want to happen. I don't really know what is going on... all I know is that I must continue to rely on the Lord and to seek out understanding. So that is what I'm doing. I have learned to call on the Lord in times of confusion.

As my new friend has put it, I must be bold, continuously asking and seeking understanding from the Lord.

From Summer to Fall

Well, tomorrow, my class begins. It's good to be back up here in Seattle. This past summer was probably the best summer I've had... It was just so busy. I am only 19 years old and I can't stop and take it easy for a while. I'm always doing something crazy or dumb or productive or not at all productive. From the Middle East to Canada to being a counselor at camp to editing the film, I never stopped. I kinda miss the good ol' high school summers where I did nothing from day to day... at the same time, I really don't. I'm so thankful for the summer I had and all the adventures that came with it. If I were to change one thing, it would be to stay more connected with all my friends. Because I was always on the go, doing the next thing, I never had time to take it easy and catch up with my friends... friends that are a big part of my life. So to my friends - I'm sorry. I can't wait to spend see (most of) you again real soon and catch up on your life.

I started a new blog... but that doesn't mean I'm quitting this one. I'll still use this one the way I have been. The new one that I got through tumblr will be for photos, film, fun quotes, or things that my friends have posted. Hey there, I know it's been a while. I've been at this place called Camp Kivu. This blog is just going to be full of random thoughts that have been on my mind or things that God has been teaching me in the past four weeks while at Kivu.

I am a counselor for the youngest cabin here at camp: 12-14 year olds. My co-counsoler is Peter. Peter is such a man of Christ and I couldn't have asked to be with a better person. We are with our campers all the time. They're crazy and a blast to be around.I have learned so much about humility and patience. I am not a counselor to satisfy my own desires, but to drop everything that is going on and to love and serve the kids in our cabin. In doing this, I have learned what is means to be selfless. I have truly been blessed by this opportunity to be a counselor. It really is a unique experience. I am sad that my time here at camp ends in six days. I was supposed to stay another two weeks, but because there are only 30 kids singed up for the next term, the camp can't afford to keep most of the staff around. But in these four weeks, I have learned a ton. My heart has changed. My attitude has changed.

But what I worry about is if this change will be a lasting one. One main reason I feel the spirit moving in my heart is because of the people I am with... the community that I am a part of. I am in a place where people all around me truly lift each other up and encourage each other and point each other to Christ. I find this community extremely unique. It is a community that I have failed to find anywhere else. This is partly why I am worried that these changes might not be lasting changes. But one thing that I've learned is that this community can be anywhere. It doesn't just have to be here at camp. Last year, going from this camp community to a college community was difficult. I expected a lot more than what I got. I realized that this was mostly my fault. First, my attitude towards the community at school was negative. I was comparing it to Kivu and that is partly what brought me down. Second, I realize that I just sat on the sidelines not doing anything to make the community stronger... I wasn't encouraging others or loving them with the love of Christ. I was just simply negative.

With that said, I am sad to leave Kivu, but I am very excited to get back to Seattle. With my attitude and my heart changed, I can get off the sidelines and be a part of and help build the community at SPU.

There really is so much going through my head right now, but I couldn't even attempt to write about it in this blog. I will continue to pray that God awakes my soul and that His will be done. I guess in all this I realize that I have hope. I have hope for this stronger community and hope for this overwhelming presence of Christ in my life. For it is my hope in Christ that keeps me going.

Some Thoughts From The Middle East

Wow. What a trip is has been. I have seen so much and done so much that it feels like I left for London about two months ago. I can't believe that it was just over two weeks ago that I finished my last final of my freshman year of college. In these past two weeks, I have seen things that I have never imagined seeing outside of a photograph. I have been places that I have never imagined me going to. Places like the spot where Jesus was crucified or the wall that separates two people groups in one country. These places are real. They really do exist. It is still hard to imagine that I've seen them.

I have really learned a lot from this trip. One thing that I have learned is that you can read books, hear stories, or watch movies about places and people, but you will never learn as much as going to these places and meeting the people there. The books I've read (not very many), stories I've heard, and movies I've seen came to life when I traveled to the Middle East. Not only did they come to life, but I have also learned so much more than a book or a story or a movie can teach.

Another thing I've learned is that understanding builds hope and peace. I stole this phrase from my friend Marie Medearis who is with me on the trip. But it's true. We came to the Middle East to search for the hope within the Israelis and Palestinians regarding the situation that they are in. We met with lots of people (mostly teens) and we have learned from their experience that they do have hope. They hope for reconciliation and peace. After asking them how, they respond "through understanding." I have heard many stories from these new friends that when they meet with people from the other side, they have hope. You see, an Israeli never sees or meets with a Palestinian and visa versa. They know about the other side and have created extreme stereotypes for each other. But when they meet and converse, stereotypes are erased. We talked with a group of Israelis who just had returned from Sweden on a retreat with a group of Palestinians. Through this retreat, they were with each other all the time. It really changed their hearts. They said that this opportunity built up a hope inside of them. A hope for reconciliation and peace. We heard many other stories like this one, all of which show that understanding builds hope and peace.

When I say peace, I don't mean 100% peace in the land. Peace in the Holy Land will not exist until the Lord returns. But this does not mean we can just sit here and do nothing. That is not what Jesus called us to do. The peace I am talking about is the peace that we must strive for. The peace between people, not land. We must act on the situation and push for the peace that people hope for. How? Through understanding. From the Eyes of Hope is a film that exists to educate the youth about the situation, so that you can better understand what's going on. When you better understand the situation, you will begin to see and have the hope that the Israelis and Palestinians have. The film will encourage you to take action and it will provide many ways you can do this. I encourage you to use your understanding and hope to take action for peace between Israelis and Palestinians.

A Barrier

A year ago, I didn't know about this wall. It is a wall that stretches over 400 miles and separates Palestine from Israel. A year ago, not only did I not know about the wall, I also knew nothing about the Israeli and Palestinian conflict. I didn't know who the Palestinians were. I didn't pay attention to the media and most churches in America ignore the conflict all together. So I just didn't know.

This is why I'm in the Middle East right now. To create a film to educate the American youth about the situation and to show that there is hope here... because there really it. I've seen it first hand from both Israelis and Palestinians. It's cool to see and experience. We're doing our best to capture this experience and to make a film to show around the U.S. in the Fall. When I look at this wall, I see hurt and pain. But it is when we engage in conversation that we see there is hope. I see a future where this wall doesn't need to exist... and so do a lot of Israelis and Palestinians.

Off to the Middle East

The time has come. I leave for the Middle East in less than 48 hours. There is so much going through my head. I am exited, nervous, and at ease all at the same time. I know that I am going to experience so many things, meet so many people, and have so many feelings running through me. But I think I am ready. I just can't believe it's so soon.

One thing we are able to do on the trip is post video updates on WBB's blog. So go HERE and stay updated with the blog. We'll do our best to "take you with us" on the trip. You can see our first video update below. We made it a couple weeks ago and you can tell we're ready for the trip.

A Year Flown By

I don't write too many personal blogs posts anymore, sorry about that... I am not the best of spitting out my thoughts about life into words. But I thought I'd say a little of what's on my mind.

I am amazed about all that has happened this past year. It is hard to fathom that a year ago, I was headed up to Camp Kivu to be the work at my favorite place on earth. I was excited. I was ready for some change in my life. That is exactly what I got. Change. Today, I am in awe of all that has happened this past year - from working at Kivu, to starting my first year of college, to now. Looking back at all this, I can only be thankful. I am blessed in so many ways and I have God to thank for that. I really need to spend more time away from my chaotic life to be silent with God. I have realized that in this past year, I have become too busy. I have also learned more of what obedience to God really is, I can't obey Him this when I am so concerned or self-focused about things going on in my life. To be honest, that is where I am right now. It's the last week of school and I'm stressing big time about finals, papers, and big summer plans. If I were not so self-focused, I would be able to rely on God whole-heartedly. That is where I desire to be.

It is all still surreal. One fourth of my college experience is over. But I am thankful for it. I made really great friends who I will miss this summer. I have managed to create a major that will lead me to exactly what I want to do for the rest of my life. I have grown closer to God. Our God really is good. So today, I look forward to tomorrow. I look forward to this summer. I look forward to sophomore year. I look forward to glorifying our God. But for now, I must focus on the now and glorifying Him even in this moment.

Middle East Trip and Within Broken Borders

As you may know, I have the great privilege of traveling to the Middle East this summer with my friend Anna Medearis and her family. What you may not know is what we are planing to do while we are there. Well, there is really so much to say! Much more than a simple blog post can handle. But I will try my best...

The Medearis family and I leave on June 15 to travel to the Middle East. During our time there, we will travel to Jordan, Israel, Palestine, and Lebanon. I will be working on two films while we're there: A promotional film for the non-profit, Ends of The Earth, and a 15 minute, interactive documentary on the Israeli and Palestinian relations. The second project has been handed to Anna and I to create. Our initial goal is to use this film to educate the American youth on Israeli and Palestinian relations.

Anna and I took this project and created a vision for the film that will not only educate youth on the history and current issues of the situation, but also provide ways for the youth to get involved. We will call the film, From the Eyes of Hope. Anna and I spent much of April creating a movement called Within Broken Borders. This movement is a movement that will educate the youth in America on global issues and will provide a way they can take action to help bring hope within broken borders. Our vision for this movement is big, but starts with this film, From the Eyes of Hope. We envision our next project to take place in the United States, exposing the longing for hope in the inner cities.

Next fall, we will be screening the film in the Seattle, Denver, and Indianapolis areas (and hopefully more). The film will inspire youth to take action and be a part of the movement. Through this project, we will provide various ways for the youth to get involved. For now, we could use your help booking and hosting a screening next fall in your town, high school, college campus, church, or youth group. Summer Plans

Yeah, it may be a little early to be thinking about summer right now... but to be honest, I can't even stop thinking about it. And to imagine that I am only 11 weeks away! Here's a little of what I have planned:

June 9 - Last final, end freshman year, fly to Arkansas for my mom's family reunion
June 13 - Fly to Denver and depart to London three hours later
June 15 - Fly to Jordan
June 17 - Drive to Israel and Palestine to create a documentary about Israeli and Palestinian relations (more details to come)
June 24 - Fly to Lebanon to create a promotional film for Ends Of The Earth
June 30 - Fly to Canada for my Dad's family reunion
July 5 - Fly to Denver and drive to Durango, CO for Camp Kivu
August 13 - Drive to Denver
After August 13 - Relax at home, spend time with friends, and edit photos and films from the Middle East trip

Now you can see why I am so thrilled about this summer. I don't know how I'm going to push through this last stretch of my freshman year of college... maybe it will be the awesome weather in Seattle, or the creation of my student designed major, or the fact that I will only have three classes. For now, I will enjoy the rest of spring break... I get to go to San Diego to see my brother and sister-in-law this Saturday! Keep posted to hear more about the Middle East trip.

World Water Day

Water really is something that we take for granted here in America. Did you know that 1/6th of the world's population does not have access to clean water? Did you know that 4,500 children die every day because they do not have access to clean water? An organization called Charity:water just launched a new project in Haiti that will help restore their access to clean water. First Design

I felt that this post would be appropriate considering my blog title is "Simplicity." We took a look at Richard Foster's Pirnciples of Simplicity in my Christian Foundations class last week. They are guidelines to practice the spiritual discipline of simplicity.

1. Buy things for their usefulness rather than their status

2. Reject anything this is producing an addiction in you

3. Develop a habit of giving things away

4. Refuse to be propagandized by the custodians of modern gadgetry

5. Reject anything that breeds the oppression of others

6. Shun anything that distracts you from seeking first the kingdom of God

Why Do You Fear Me?

My friend's dad, Carl Medearis, recently came out with a book that he co-authored with Ted Dekker. It is called Tea With Hezbollah. They recently hosted a live web event, Why Do You Fear Me?, where they talked about the relations between America and the Middle East. If you are interested in these matters, I strongly encourage you to take a look at this event. You can view the video from the event HERE.

If you are like me and you don't know much about the Muslim religion, check out this book that Carl Medearis wrote called Muslims, Christians, and Jesus. I found this book really helpful in gaining knowledge about our Muslim friends and what they believe.

The Medearis' have invited me to travel to the Middle East with them this summer to capture a documentary about reconciliation between the Israelis and Palestinians and a film featuring Ends Of The Earth. I can hardly wait for the summer- God has huge plans for this trip! I'll share more about the trip as it gets closer. I just got back from Mars Hill's service. Pastor Mark Driscoll just got back from Haiti and he talked about his trip as well as the church and their part in helping Haiti- OUR brothers and sisters in Christ. He and James MacDonald, a pastor from Harvest Bible Chapel in Chicago, started a project called Churches Helping Churches. This project calls the churches here to help the churches in Haiti. God has given me the gift of photography, I love capturing life and telling stories through photographs. But there is one problem - I have much to learn. Worship In Everything

I attend Mars Hill Church here in Seattle. Last Sunday, Mark Driscoll gave a great sermon about temptations. One thing he said really stood out to me. He told us that everything we do is an act of worship. Whether it is eating, conversing, or watching a movie. The question is: Is what you do for the glory of God? Driscoll went on to say that if what you do is not for God, then it is for the glory of Satan. So everything we do is either worshiping God, or worshiping Satan. He described sin as the worship of Satan. So basically, everything we do that does not glorify God, is sinful nature.

This hit me in the face pretty hard. It was a completely different way of looking at sin and worship. It goes back to my previous post and how everything I do should be revolved around my savior. The truth is, that's what I want. I want to glorify Jesus. My prayer is that I can do this in humility and love.

Priorities

While in conversation on the phone with my friend, she brought up something that I know I need to do a better job with: time management. One thing she told me really stuck out- "Your priorities are where you spend your time." I know I've heard this phrase before, but I had never paid any attention to it. But the reality is, it's true.

This made me take a hard look at my daily routine... at how I spend my time. In reviewing this, I've realized that how I spend my time does not match what I want my priorities to be. My number one priority is my relationship with Jesus. I know this doesn't mean I should be reading the Bible 24-7, but it does mean a lot more than a short, not-so-quite time just before falling asleep. So how can I make God my number one priority? For me, it means giving Him the glory in everything I do. It means not holding a grudge, but to give mercy. It means being honest, humble, and loving. It means being more like Jesus. And that is what I crave to be.

I know I can't fill all my time with Jesus, but I can try my best to imitate his actions. I can pray that I will be more like Him and that my number one priority will be a part of my other priorities, from relationships to school work.

This Past Year

Looking back on 2009, I have realized what a great year it has been! It was about a year ago when I wrote a post about things that I wanted to focus on in the following semester. It's interesting to read that post and see how much has changed since then. This post is sort of a response to that post from a year ago. This may not make any sense unless you visit the post from a year ago. Click HERE to see the post.

1. Building my relationship with my savior. Today, I can still say this is my biggest priority. I owe my whole life to the One who gave it to me. I have been pretty selfish this past year when it came to spending more time with my savior. It wasn't until last June, when I started working at Camp Kivu that I realized this needed to be changed. My time with the Lord since (and before) then has been such a great blessing. I look forward to spending more time with Jesus and seeing what he has planned for me in the next year.
2. Rwanda. Wow, looking back on that trip, I see what a huge blessing it was and how it changed me. You can go HERE to see a more detailed post about the trip. Or even go to THIS post to see to video from the mission trip. But I will never be able to explain in words how amazing this trip was.
3. Maji. (Click the link to go to the website). This was a project that a couple friends and I started last December. This project could not have happened the way it did without so many supporters who were passionate for the cause we supported. Because of them, we raised enough money through t-shirt sales and donations to build two water wells for those who did not have access to clean water. It was such a blessing to be a part of that project and to see how it has impacted the people who got the water as well as the supporters of the project. We were also grateful for Charity:water for working with us and providing the solution to the problem. Although we did not continue selling shirts through the summer or the beginning of college, Maji's site is still operating to continue to spread awareness of the situation.
4. Higher Ways. My old youth group puts on a winter retreat every year. This past year, the seniors on the leadership team led and organized this retreat. I thought it went really well and had a great impact on the students there as well as myself. But when it was my turn to speak... well, let's just say it's not my gift. But it was definitely a blessing to be able to speak and I learned a whole lot through that process.
5. Moving. I thought it would have been a lot different living in a new house after living in the same one for 11 years. But I've realized home is truly where the heart is, not where you've been most of your life. Point being, I didn't realize much of a difference... until I moved to college. That was a change.
6. Keeping my license. Fail. Enough said. But I did pretty well considering I didn't loose it until September (when it should have been February). I have defiantly learned how much I took for granted having a license. Then again, it really isn't that bad because I have been in Seattle for most of the time and therefore, did not need a license. Good news is back in March, just in time for spring break. Here's some advise: Don't speed (or race).
7. Senioritist. The end of high school wasn't as bad as everyone make it sound... It's more just an excuse to not do work. And let me tell you, I did not do work.
8. Graduate. Check. Next up, college.

I think that's enough blabbing about the past. I am just very thankful for everything that happened this past year, including the stuff that happened after that last semester of high school... My brother getting married, working at Kivu, going to college, meeting new friends, and so much more. 2009 was a great year... nothing to regret and so much to be thankful for.

Trade as One sells goods that impoverished people around the world created. They empower the poor and provide them with living wages so that they can live sustainably. Tenemos Trestle

As you may know, one of my passions is making films. I started thinking how that passion of mine got started. After all, it wasn't too long ago that I knew nothing about making films. Anyways, I thought I'd share with you the project that started it all- Tenemos Trestle. My friends and I created this ski documentary two winters ago. We ended up premiering it to raise money for an orphanage. It's funny to watch this video and think it was only two years ago. Wow, I've learned a lot about film making... and have MUCH more to learn.

Well, enjoy Tenemos Trestle, my first film project. I thought it would be appropriate considering it's the beginning of the ski season. And yes, it has three parts. Killer.

Give Thanks

Tomorrow is Thanksgiving. In the past, I have made this holiday a day that comes every year where I give thanks for what I have. Giving thanks is not something we should do one day of the year. There is SO much we should be thankful for.

I started a journal a few weeks ago where I record everything I am thankful for. Yes, that simple. By doing this, I have actually had to think of all that I am thankful for instead of just ignoring the fact that I am thankful for it. This is just one way you could be more thankful in your life. Another could be simply saying "thank you" to whoever is serving you, it just might make their day better. It's all so simple. Don't take what you have for granted. Give thanks.

Flaws

We all have them. They are a part of who we are. I could write books of flaws that I have. I was talking with my friend the other day and she pointed out how the flaws that you see in other people are often your own flaws. I have never actually realized this. I am so judgmental and arrogant. After spending time with and getting to know new people, I begin to judge them and their flaws start to irritate me. Something in me just wants to accuse people of what they are doing wrong. But I can't build a friend up when I have the same problems as he.

This message from Matthew sums it up pretty well.
"For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you. Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother's eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye? How can you say to your brother, 'Let me take the speck out of your eye,' when all the time there is a plank in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother's eye."

So now, when I notice flaws in other people, I will take a good look at my own life to see what needs to be changed. Then I will not be hypocritical and I will be able to offer a helping hand instead of a pointing finger.

Transitions

There is a photo contest at my school right now where we are supposed to submit a picture that best represents our transition to Seattle Pacific University. I ended up picking this shot that I recently took to represent my transition.

The person with the shadow represents me. The shadow represents my past. The person is facing away from his shadow and in a sense walking towards his future. You can see the details of the person through the shadow, and not in the person himself.

My past portrays who I am, but there is still so much of me that will change. (Hence the fact you can't clearly see the person in this photo). I am walking into SPU, into a new part of my life, knowing that many things about me will change. My past is only a shadow. A shadow that paints who I am and why. But shadows change, my past will change, and so will I.

This is my transition.

Charity:water, the company that Maji supported through selling shirts, posted a link about a new non-profit called One Day's Wages. I was checking out their site when I cam across this video. That's right, somehow I ended up in one of the coolest cities ever. I love it! And not just the Seattle part, the college part too. As I walk around campus, interact with new friends, or even walk into wrong classrooms, I see how God has blessed me. Well, it has finally arrived. College- The time of our lives. It's crazy that I'm here right now. But let me tell you, after the orientation weekend and three classes, I love it so far. I am meeting tons of friends and doing tons of things. The school part is already a bit harsh. I have a lot of homework right off the start. What to expect? Good thing I only have three classes! And they should be pretty interesting.

I've been thinking about something my friend said the other night. She gave us an analogy: We are all puzzle pieces. Once we graduate from high school and put into college, we are taken out of the puzzle that we were in and we can see all of the curves that we have in us.

So true. I feel like now, I am put into a whole new world, a whole new puzzle. I can see all of my curves and see who I really am. It is a very important time in our lives. So, I'm ready. I'm excited. I have been taken out of the puzzle and now looking at where I am and where I belong in this world. Thanks Lyndsay!

What do I do with my life? A question that many people ask quite often. Of course it's only fair that I ask this question as I head off to the college world. So, what do I do with my life?

When going into college, you seem to get asked a certain question many times: "What are you going to study?" In other words, "What the heck are you going to do with your life." I have realized that my answer to this question have changed quite often in the past year. Not huge changes, just enough to say "I have no idea." But to be honest, that's okay with me. I'm okay with not knowing exactly what I am going to do during college, or even after college.

When deciding what to do with my life, I have to look to the One who gave it to me. I know that whatever I do, I want to glorify God. So I look to 1 Corinthians 12:14-27. It talks about how the body is made up of many parts and that it can't function correctly without a certain part. Likewise, we are the body of Christ. We were all given different gifts so that we can play our part in the body of Christ.

So there you go. What do I do with my life? Use my gifts to glorify God as a part of the Body of Christ. Sweet. It's that easy. Let's get it on. NOT. This only gives me an idea of what I need to do with my life. Now this one idea sparks many other ideas. I like ideas, so I played with them. Here is what my ideas led to: doing marketing and/or multimedia production (photography and film) for a non-profit company. This one idea turned into a possibility that has now become a dream of mine. So now, when I ask "What do I do with my life?" I get excited. Because my initial answer of working for a non-profit doing marketing and/or multimedia production is an answer that I would love to make happen and an answer that will use my gifts to glorify God as a part of the body of Christ.

I guess this leads me to another question... How do I make this happen? I've got to be honest here, I have no idea. In shorter terms, maybe study marketing and multimedia production in college. Yeah! That's a good idea! In longer terms, I am uncertain... but now, it's a pleasant uncertainty.
